On the way back home the other day, I passed by a sign that had on it a picture of a pin-up girl that said "Southern Girls Have Curves." Well, if you know me at all, you know this bothers me. The saying "Real Women Have Curves" that has blown up in the past couple of years has always gotten under my skin (you know, past that superficial layer that advertising companies tend to forget about).
So let me break it down for you.
Some women have curves. Some women do not. Some women have big asses and small breasts, some have big breasts and small asses. Some women are model height, some are fairy height. Some women have short hair, some women have long hair.
Boring.
But the realness of a woman - that is something else entirely.
A real woman breaks ground whether she is walking in 6-inch heels, ballet flats, or tennishoes. A real woman turns heads when she speaks, and not because of her fire-engine red or simple nude lips. A real woman juggles everything a man juggles x1000 and doesn't blink. A real woman cherishes the body she is given, treats it with respect, and loves herself daily - and she never, ever needs an advertisement to tell her that she is real. Because a real woman realizes that society has oogled at women's bodies for way too long, and that real woman knows that her brilliance, her freedom, and her wit overcomes that dark past daily. A real woman is kind and powerful; she is soft and made of stone. And most of all, a real woman knows that her worth extends far past the hills and valleys of her body.
The last time I checked, I was a real woman.
What about you?
